nothingness

A lot of taboo subjects are driven by how people fear things. We do not talk about death, we avoid "nothing" like the plague, we rely on religion to provide the hope that after death, there is more than just nothingness. Imagining to be dead, to simply not exist at all can terrify people.

We avoid silence branded as awkward, filling the gap with music or just shifting your jacket to make noise, maybe coughing. Anything to become farther away from the nothingness.

Death is a taboo subject for many reasons. It's a painful topic for many, some who have just lost someone especially. We do not seek out things that hurt as human beings, we seek out things that make us feel good. When you read about someone about to die, they always seem to ask if it hurts. People want to be with those they love, wanting more time constantly.

The nothingness involved in death terrifies us. We try so hard to believe in the after life, in trying to believe that we are reborn and do not have to fade into nothingness. We turn to God with hopes of continuing on.

We do not speak of the inevitable, of the thing that humans are helpless to succumb to. We are life forms with expiration dates, but we never want to know when the time comes. It is taboo to speak of the end that no one knows when it will come.
